The Local SEO Checklist Every Solo Attorney Needs

If you're a solo attorney competing for local search visibility, you're not up against a marketing department — you're up against a to-do list that never ends. The good news: local SEO for attorneys doesn't require a retainer with an agency. It requires about an afternoon and this checklist.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single highest-leverage move you can make. Google pulls from your Business Profile to populate the local map pack — the three listings that show up above organic results for searches like "divorce attorney near me."
Fill out every field, not just the required ones:
Primary category (e.g., "Personal Injury Attorney," not just "Lawyer")
Secondary categories if you practice in more than one area
Service area — or physical address if you see walk-in clients
Business hours, phone number, website
A description that mentions your practice areas and city by name
Photos of your office, your team, and you
An incomplete profile signals to Google — and to prospective clients — that the listing isn't actively managed.
2. Fix your NAP consistency
NAP means Name, Address, Phone number. It needs to match exactly across every platform where your firm appears: your website, Google Business Profile, Avvo, FindLaw, Justia, your state bar directory, and any local chamber of commerce listing.
"123 Main St, Suite 200" and "123 Main Street Ste 200" count as inconsistent to Google's algorithm. Pick one format, then search your firm name to find every existing listing and correct the mismatches. This alone can take an hour, but it's foundational — inconsistent NAP data undermines the local authority signals you're trying to build everywhere else.
3. Build a review generation habit
Reviews are a ranking factor and a conversion factor. Prospective clients read them before they call, and Google weighs both the volume and recency of reviews when ranking local results.
You don't need hundreds. You need a system:
Ask every satisfied client directly, right after a positive outcome
Send a text or email with a direct link to your Google review page
Respond to every review, positive or negative — professionally, without discussing case specifics
Consistency matters more than volume. Five reviews a month beats fifty in one quarter and then silence.
4. Get your local keyword basics right
You don't need an SEO agency to figure out what your prospective clients are searching. You need to think like them. Combine your practice area with your city and neighborhood: "estate planning attorney [city]," "DUI lawyer near [neighborhood]."
Work these phrases naturally into:
Your homepage title tag and meta description
Practice area page headers
Your Google Business Profile description
Blog content addressing local legal questions
Avoid keyword stuffing. One well-placed local phrase per page beats five awkward repetitions.
Start with the highest-impact item
If you only do one thing this afternoon, complete your Google Business Profile. It's the fastest path to local visibility, and everything else on this checklist reinforces the authority you're building there. Once that's done, NAP consistency and a simple review-request habit will round out a foundation most solo attorneys never get around to setting.
